The new Rouse Hill Town Centre is located in the suburb of Rouse Hill, within the Baulkham Hills Shire, approximately 39 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. The 122-hectare site is a combination of parkland, residential projects and a shopping centre development.

Hi-Light’s aluminium screens provide screen solutions to over 30 aspects of the project. The design brief included the need for privacy screens, display screens, sliding screens and passive sun control.

The front cover shows treatment to the western and northern elevations of the centre management offices. The oblique-angled SR203/75º screens are a most effective and striking shade treatment, with the blades oriented vertically. Contained behind the screens are aluminium grated walkways for servicing the facade and ensuring high-angle sun protection.

The image above shows a striking internal view of the shopping centre, depicting five different profiles of louvre blade oriented to achieve optimum shade and light diffusion through the year. Sun control to the residential towers is achieved with a combination of vertical and horizontal screens, type HC603. The cafe security sunscreens are type HA753(R), hinged with gas struts and attached to steel sub-frames. Treatment to the secret garden was achieved with suspended tiers of HA503 grating panels up to 7,200 mm in length.

Hi-Light Industries’ challenge was to provide structural verification, design and construction of new louvre systems, design of the connections and manufacture of the required screens, as well as access equipment and installation of the screen system.

For over 25 years, Hi-Light and Webforge screen systems have been custom designed and manufactured in Australia from Australian materials. Thousands of successfully completed projects in Australia and around the world are testimony to the comprehensive testing, care and research performed on Hi-Light products.

To apply a cool, decorative finish, a sandblasting technique can be used on CaesarStone surfaces.

Thanks to its composition – 97% quartz plus pigments and polymers – CaesarStone is strong enough to endure the sandblasting. A fine stream of water containing abrasive powder is blasted at the material at high pressure, allowing it to either etch the surface or completely cut through.

These patterned slabs can be used as feature walls, counters and partitions in commercial or residential design. The process is highly controlled and computer operated, enabling endless applications for architects and designers.

The sandblasted surface maintains its original CaesarStone properties, including resistance to scratching, staining and heat, while simultaneously requiring little maintenance.

For greater comfort, EComfort effectively absorbs foot impact to reduce leg fatigue. The felt-like EComfort backing reduces noise too, resulting in quiet environments.

The range was developed for superior dimensional stability – no PVC, fibreglass or bitumen is used during its construction.

As housing lots get smaller and houses get bigger, more and more residential projects incorporate fire-rated exterior walls to satisfy BCA requirements for buildings constructed in close proximity to the boundary.

Boral’s OutRwall lightweight, fire-rated exterior wall system provides a cost-effective solution for such buildings. Providing fire ratings of 1 or 1.5 hours, the OutRwall exterior wall system utilizes Boral Wet Area Firestop plasterboard on the outside of the wall frame, protected by waterproofing membrane and lightweight exterior cladding on battens. Standard Core or Firestop plasterboard is applied to the inside of the wall frame, depending on whether fire rating is required from both directions.

Suitable for new residential and commercial construction or extensions to existing buildings, OutRwall can be prefabricated and installed from one side if access to the neighbouring property is restricted.

Port Melbourne’s iconic Station Pier has recently undergone a facelift. CTA’s PolyPad® retrofit tactile indicators have been selected as the product of choice for this historical timepiece.

Doug McGuiness, asset engineer with the Port of Melbourne Corporation, said of the product: “CTA’s PolyPad® retrofit tactiles were used on the revamp of Station Pier because of their unique dimensions of 600 mm × 900 mm. This means that they provide fewer joints, giving a more seamless look to the project.” He adds, “Flexibility was a big consideration as they were being placed over a timber boardwalk which has some movement to it. We needed a product that could offer flexibility because of this.”

Station Pier has heritage overlays, so, even though the code for the disabled takes precedence over heritage considerations, there is still an effort made to retain an aesthetic balance between heritage and legal requirements.

A recent study has shown that plantings of King Alfred Dianella Caerulea “John 316” PBR can be an effective solution to erosion problems. In the study, King Alfred strengthened soil a record 752% or 70 kPA. To put that in perspective, it is similar to two-dimensional biodegradable jute mats, except that King Alfred strengthens the soil five centimetres deep, providing three-dimensional soil protection.

King Alfred is a proven plant for use on slopes and stream banks. Research also showed that King Alfred has excellent tolerance to salt spray, wet conditions and drought. It tolerates grey water better than many other similar plants.

High-quality shade structures by MakMax are designed to blend architecture with its environment. Applications for their range of state-of-the-art membranes are limited only by the architect’s imagination.

MakMax offers an exclusive range of environmentally friendly fabrics (ETETFE) and new Ti02 membranes with impressive self-cleaning and heat-preventive properties. A chemical reaction on the membrane’s surface results in decomposition of stains through oxidation. The reflectivity of the material’s surface deflects UV rays to maintain a comfortable internal temperature.

Ti02 membranes maintain their quality under various environmental conditions. TiO2 is durable and strong, suitable for many varied applications, and a worthy addition to any building.

Bauhaus trained and with four decades of appliance expertise, H RH Reinhard Segers is the designer behind Gaggenau’s latest range, the 200 Series. Working with his four-person design team, Segers is the custodian of the brand’s aesthetic – evidenced in everything from individual ovens to showrooms and test kitchens for Michelin-starred chefs. He visited Australia during Designex to discuss the technology and design that drive the Gaggenau brand.

Having worked with Gaggenau for over 12 years, Segers has been responsible for extending the brand’s product design. “We definitely try to develop a similar design language, but every product has a different requirement relating to its functionality,” he says. “What I don’t like is if you’re trying to apply the same design language to everything you do – it’s like putting tomato sauce on all your food.”

His design philosophy is based around the seamless integration of beautiful design and advanced technology. “They belong together; one needs the other. It’s different when you make consumer products – even cutlery or crockery – because the formal aspect is always more important. You must show its functionality.”

Segers explains the technological challenges of designing the 200 Series’ inventive door-mounted control panel. “The module itself wasn’t the problem; the challenge was reducing the heat. It’s a pyrolytic oven – it heats up to 500º. Because the panel is right at the point where the heat is greatest we had to design something to take the heat away. We managed to insert four panels of glass behind the control module to reduce the heat.”

Boasting bottom-hinged doors and intelligent modular designs, the 200 S Series ovens are available in Australia from Sampford IXL.
